Shanda Interactive takes 19.5% Sina stake
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Chinese Internet portal Sina Corp. jumped in late trading Friday after it said online gaming operator Shanda Interactive Entertainment has taken an almost 20 percent stake in the company and may consider a takeover bid.
In after hours trading, Sina (SINA: news, chart, profile) shares rose 6.4 percent to $27.24. The shares closed the regular session up 10 percent to $25.60 ahead of the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Shanghai-based Shanda Interactive (SNDA: news, chart, profile) released a statement Friday evening saying that it and its controlling shareholder, Skyline Media Limited had acquired the stake in Sina.
Sina, in its own filing with the SEC, said the shares were purchased between Jan. 12 and Feb. 10 for an aggregate price of $230.4 million.
Sina provides Internet searches and online content, including popular "fortune-telling" services such as horoscopes. See previous story.
Sina also said in the filing that the shares were bought with the intention of acquiring a substantial ownership in the company and that Shanda Interactive could seek a business combination, including a merger.
Shares of Shanda Interactive fell 1 percent to $29.68 in after-hours trading. The shares closed the regular session at $30.01, up 1.6 percent.
