1. check the oil is it black, or is the level low.
2. Check the trany fluid, is it red like it should be or is it black, indicating burned fluid and an overheated transmission/or worn internal parts(clutches)
3. shocks, push down on the car to get it rocking up and down then release, it should not continue to rock more than a couple times. Front and rear.
4. Check the radiator when cold and look at the fluid, is it rusty or is it green/red for toyota sometimes.
5. look under the hood, basically see if everything looks correct. Engine running listen for lifters tapping or odd noises.
6. Check the tires, look at the tire wear, uneven tire wear-alignment is out, or cupped tread-bad shocks.
7. Look the body over and see if all the seams are straight.
8. Ask questions as you examine this car. Why is the owner selling.
9. Open the trunk, stick your nose in there and smell for odd smells like mildew, look for rust. Your looking for a car that seals out water, if you smell mildew that might mean that the car leaks water into the trunk.
10. Test drive the car.
Slow around town, drive the car to see if it accelerates smoothly. See if the car shifts gears correctly and smoothly.
10 a. Test the brakes, while driving about 25 MPH, find a safe place to test if the brakes stop in a straight line. Release your hands from steering wheel about 1/2 inch and apply brakes lightly, check if it pulls to any side.
11. Find a hill and drive the car up a hill. Does it drive confidently forward.
12. On the highway, Test acceleration from an onramp and give it full pedal and see how it accelerates (if it is wet out be dam careful)
13. on the highway at highway speed release your hands from the steering wheel agout 1/2 inch and see if the car pulls to any side / your checking steering alignment. If it pulls to any side check tire presure, if the tires are ok then alignment is out.
14. After test drive ask the owner what is the best price that he/she will sell the car.
15. After test drive, leave the car running, and parked. Look under the chasis and see if there is any oil or fluids leaking.
