This is human tragedy! Sometimes such tragedies happened to our co-humans around us. Let me give you three real stories out of maybe two dozens of cases that I personally know:
1)A couple left China in 1949 for business in the USA and left three kids in China, one daughter of ten and two younger brothers. The couple thought they would be back to China in one year. One year turned out to be forever； in 1975 they came back almost to the door step of the mainland. They stopped at HK and were too scared to cross the border. Children were called on to meet their parents in HK but the hk visas were rejected. The parents went back to the States and died within a few years without seeing their kids again.
2)One young lady left the mainland in 1949 with her "company" (air force) and left her classmate lover behind in Shanghai. They have not seen each other ever since, even though their children have met. The old lady told me she has already forgot everything happened before 1949 but I have found out she remembers my parents very well and in every details. It must be called ｓｅｌｅｃｔive memory. She is trying to shut herself off from that period.
3)One young student with the letter of recommendation from Song zhi wen came to the States to study political science in the late 40s leaving his family back in China, a wife and two kids. For the well-known reasons he never went back. He became a full professor and married to an American lady. Two years later they divorced. Then he went to Taiwan to import one wife and had two more kids later on. In 1980s he went back to China as a visiting professor and found out his "old" wife was still waiting for him but was dying! He divorced his Taiwan wife and went back to China for good leaving eveything to his family in the States. He passed away in Suzhou.
Sigh, sigh, sigh. Life sometimes is full of helpless sighs.
