The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine that can potentially prevent most forms of cervical cancer, the world's No. 2 cause of cancer death among women.
The vaccine, produced by Merck and called Gardasil, blocks four types of the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, as the Los Angeles Times explains. HPV is responsible for 70% of the roughly 10,000 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in the U.S. each year. The FDA said Merck's trials show Gardasil is "nearly 100% effective" in preventing HPV, which causes the genital warts that can lead to cancer, the BBC notes. The agency approved use of Gardasil in females aged nine years through 26, and the Centers for Disease Control later this month is set to consider a recommendation that all girls aged 11 and 12 be vaccinated. The FDA decision isn't a total surprise, since an advisory committee unanimously endorsed Gardasil last month. But it had faced opposition from some American conservative groups that argued the vaccine could promote sexual promiscuity.
Cancer vaccines are rare -- the only other approved by the FDA tackles Hepatitis B, which can lead to liver cancer -- and the license is a coup for Merck, which has now seen three of its major vaccines approved this year. (GlaxoSmithKline is working on a similar cervical-cancer vaccine.) Merck is also seeking FDA approval for Gardasil to be used on boys -- HPV can cause genital warts and head and neck cancer in men, who can, of course, also spread it to women. But more study is needed on disease-prevention among males, and the next big step for Gardasil will be the CDC decision on whether to recommend it. A CDC nod would in turn typically trigger insurance coverage, though each U.S. state would decide on whether inoculation would be mandatory. The New York Times says private insurers are likely to cover Gardasil for 11- and 12-year-old girls but not for older women. And while vaccines are considered among the most cost-effective of medical interventions, Gardasil's price -- $360 for the full three-shot course -- could make it unavailable for uninsured children in the U.S. and most women in poor countries.
The CDC says that every year, about 5.5 million people in the U.S. become newly infected with HPV, and that by age 50, at least 80% of women will have had an HPV infection. The American Cancer Society estimates that this year in the U.S., there will be 9,700 new cases of cervical cancer and 3,700 deaths from the disease. And the Washington Post says that world-wide, cervical cancer each year is thought to claim 233,000 lives.
