Supervisors to Decide on Drug Disposal
By Reina V. Slutske

A proposal for a report to help provide a countywide disposal program for prescription and over-the-counter drugs is set to be presented to the Board of Supervisors today.
The board will be consulting the Department of Health along with the Sanitation District on how to proceed in providing drug disposal for the county.
The program, if feasible, would include additional drop-off sites for medication, including local pharmacies and clinics.
After residents drop off leftover prescription or over-the-counter drugs, they are collected and sent to be incinerated.
Improper drug disposal such as flushing pills down the toilet, putting them into a sink drain or just dumping them into a trash can cause contamination in groundwater and landfills, as well as problems for aquatic animals.
The program, which is called "No Drugs Down the Drain," started in the city of Los Angeles and Orange County and has been well-received, said Paul Martyn, head of the industrial waste section at the Sanitation District.
It is being proposed to be expanded countywide by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, a response the potential danger of medications going into the water supply.
"We're asking the question, 'How do we address this problem?'" Antonovich's spokesman Tony Bell said.
Currently, the Sanitation District and county host events to dispose of household hazardous waste across the county, including an event scheduled at College of the Canyons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Commercial pharmacies such as CVS and Rite-Aid have participated in the past by distributing fliers, Martyn said, and are also encouraged to participate in a countywide program.
Although people can drop off their medications to be incinerated, it is also safe to put drugs in a securely-sealed container or plastic bag and throw them away in the trash, Martyn said.
However, it is important to make sure that all drugs are out of the reach of children or pets.
Today the Board of Supervisors will also consider a proposal to reauthorize a partnership between the Coroner's Office and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to train and allow the hospital to perform smaller-scale autopsies.
The proposal would also authorize the coroner's office, which has recently been plagued by overcrowding, to train other hospitals throughout the county to perform smaller-scale autopsies in the future.
