Three reasons I can think of why youtube grew so fast:

1. Social fucntion. Video can be easily emailed to others, so more people will come to it.

2. Use Flash. So no more video format problems.

3. Download speed.

Maybe your site lacks some critical features. Some details, although look trivial, may determine the success or failure of a venture.
