Currently with the Bush tax cut, the max US income text rate is 35%. For corporation, it is 39%. Long term capital gain tax is 15%.
Plus, there are state income tax. For New York and California, state income tax for high income tax payer could top 8-10%.
Then there are the sale tax for most states.
Overall, high income tax payer in US have a tax burden about 45%.
But US is considered low tax when comparing to most EU and Northern Europen countries.
For a poor country such as China, based on average individual income, the tax burden is also high for medium to high income (RMB 5000 and up) tax payers, especially consider the relative cost of home ownership and very little other benefits the tax provides.
