I know someone who was in the same shoes as you. The wife did not fight for the allimony in the beginning, as she knew her ex-husband can not offord it. Now he is doing well in China and starts to pay the college tuition of their child. He is the father after all.
I do not know your hubby in person, but from what you described, I do not think your husband is a hoplessly bad person, but just too anxious for success, and his perspective toward some basic principals in life is different from yours.
