I saw the movie today. Mr. Clint Eastwood must have lost his mind. He has gone insane to make a movie to glorify and humanize Japs.
Mr. Eastwood had trouble getting funding for the movie. I take comfort in knowing that this movie has sold under $500,000 box office in the U. S. thus far.
Now back to 1945;
President Truman and his military and civilian planners were aware of the heavy casualties that would likely be incurred in an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
The american started bombing campaign against Japan's five largest cities (Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, Osaka, and Nagoya) in early 1945. All B-29 bombers were loaded with oil and incendiaries because Japan's wood-and-paper cities burned easily.
On March 9th, the bombs and the resulting firestorm killed more than 80,000 people and wounded 40,000 in Tokyo. Over 200,000 buildings, one-fourth of Tokyo had been destroyed and a million people left homeless.
By June, Japan's five largest cities had been devastated. 260,000 people had been killed. Over 10 million people made homeless.
Now there were few viable targets left in these 5 cities, the huge bombers turned to Japan's secondary cities. Between June and August there were sixteen such attackes on fifty smaller inustrial towns, the bombers dropped 54,000 tons of incendiaries. 60% of the ground area of the country's cities and towns had been burnt out.
The Japanese militarists were still determined to fight it out to the end. No one dared speak of peace.
One of the four cities: Kokura, Nagasaki, Niigata, and Hiroshima was going to be the target of the first atomic bomb.
Hiroshima, the site of ship building factories, electrical works, and other assorted war industries, was chosen to be the first target.
On the moring of August 6th, B-29 bomber dropped the first atomic bomb Enola Gay over Hiroshima. The official count of the dead was 71,379.
President Truman issued a statement calling for the Japanese to surrender.
