Hi, everyone. This is Global Days for Darfur week, and churches, synagogues and schools are rallying to protest Sudan's genocidal regime, a regime responsible for the death of more than 200,000 people and the displacement of another 2.5 million. One thing many may not be aware of is China's role in Darfur. Last year the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling for a peacemaking force there, China insisted that the Sudanese Government consent to the Mission, they didn't. We spoke with Eric Reeves, a Sudan analyst at Smith College, China has been Sudan's largest supplier of arms over the last decade, he told us, and roughly two thirds of Sudan's crude oil is exported to China. China has leverage he said, and with the Beijing Olympics approaching, they are particularly vulnerable to international pressure. So maybe it's about time China felt the heat.
