so I can’t judge whether BCS is cheap. But general speaking, a stock trades below its book value because investors believe its book value will further deteriorate. In BCS’s case, I guess if the company continue to write down the bad debts and post huge lose going forward, then pretty soon you will find its book value much lower than the 12 bn showed in their 2007’s balance sheet. So it is traded at a huge discount to its book value for a reason.
If you don’t know for sure that Bear Stern can survive the sub-prime crisis, then buying BCS is just like a gamble. Remember what happened to Worldcom? …
