And democracy is almost certainly less efficient than dictatorship, autocrats or authoritarian when it comes to certain things.
Democracy gives people the freedom to choose their own destiny and how they want to be governed, for better or worse. You have the choice to be smart or stupid, and with any choice there's always consequence.
The argument is not that these choices are right or wrong, what matters is who will ultimately make these choices, we, the people (directly or through our representatives), or the government.
My opinion, the freedom of choice is fundamentally far more important than the promise of a "better life". If they can "give" you a better life, they can take it away anytime.
Democracy is never "designed" to give people a better life, but history shows free societies tend to be more successful in commerce, more innovative in science, and more creative in art, freedom is sweet and rewarding after all.
