Today my dad and I went to the national gallery to see Salvador Dali's art works. Dali is a famous painter from Spain. He died at an age of 85. In his early, early life he wanted to be a cook which is similar to me. He paints weird and funny paintings which belong to "surrealism". I think his paintings are good because they are unique.
Surrealism means the painting is between reality and dreams. He must have had many nightmares before he drew those paintings. When I first heard about Dali I wanted to see his work straight away. So I asked my dad many times. He didn't agree at first until I painted a nice water color.
We saw around two hundred pieces of art. Most of them were surrealistic. We also saw a movie which I thought must be "M" rated. It was about a man with bugs in his hand. He had an accident on his bike and a lady took care of him. It was really scary at the start because someone cut an eyeball in half.
I liked a picture of Dali's wife, Gala in a picture of spheres because it was a smooth painting. The picture is made up of spheres. On the spheres there is a picture of Gala. Under the picture was a rhino with the question, 'which sphere is the smallest?’. I think all of the spheres are the same even though the spheres in the middle look very small, in perspective views the spheres are all the same.
There was also a painting of melting clocks. It was in a painting of Dali's searching for the fourth dimension. There was also a painting of a dream in which was women with flower heads held melted pianos and violins.
Besides paintings there were also sculptures and photos. My dad like a photo called Milk Explosion best. There sculptures were nice too although I didn't really understand what they mean. I just looked at one called ‘Lobster Telephone’. A red cooked lobster was on a telephone. I didn’t understand what it meant. But, the lobster looked very delicious.
In a velvet padded room there were lots of pieces of jewellery. I saw one that looked like a heart. A small plague said it was the heart of a queen beating for her followers. On the gold heart was a miniature version of the queen’s crown. The gallery did an ant trail in which children could follow around the exhibition. The ants were projected on the carpet from the overhead laser beams.
It was a great experience and a fun one too, but I was very tired so I asked Dad to have a lobster for dinner and he agreed.
