From technical point of view, 3G data over GPRS/EDGE, or cdma2000 (1x and 1xEV-DO), or UMTS (to be commercially launched in Europe soon) cellular networks are more advantageous, in terms of system capacity, data security and coverage/roaming. In terms of economy, this also translates into higher revenue to wireless carriers or service providers.
However, WLAN (based on 802.11a/b/g standard) is rapidly gaining popularity, both in residential and commercial environments. It has limited mobility (with hotspot typically covering an area about 200 ft in radius), but has high bandwidth (11Mbps to 55Mbps).
Recently, Verizon Wireless starts providing WLAN services in some limited areas (just at about the same time they annouced the commercial 1xEV-DO service in metropolian areas of San Diego, CA and Washington DC). That's an interesting trend.
I have a laptop with built-in 802.11b adaptor, and use it extensively both in the office and at home (Cable Modem + WLAN hub). Now I'm so used to it that I will feel very uncomfortable without it.
