Despite what the article says about Chinese foods resembling the taste of a Krispy Kreme glazed donut, my research shows that Chinese people find donuts to be far too sweet tasting. Not just a little too sweet, but rather "spit it into your napkin when nobody is looking" too sweet. That's a fairly difficult barrier to entry in my book.
As for Krispy Kreme, they will succeed in Hong Kong due to the large number of westerners living there and the very westernized Hong Kong natives. When they eventually come to real China, they will not succeed unless they greatly modify their recipes (not simply putting red bean paste in a couple of varieties), something that a large franchise would be unlikely to want to do.

Emirates, and the United Kingdom. The Company also has announced a franchise
development agreement for China
