but it is the volatility during the decline that kills many greedy bears.
America needs to keep its reserve currency status. The reserve currency status is actually like drug addiction. It is short-term good, long-term damaging since it inevitably creates manufacturing decline and trade account deficit. But in the short run, the consensus among elites is to conserve this status at all costs.
There is a limit to its ability to depreciate its currency. America could not do it too fast, too much so that it drives all suckers like Japan and China away. But depreciation is the only way to reduce its inflation-adjusted liability.
If US can maintain a 3% depreciation for 10 years and depreciate away half of its value, then 10 years later, it could come back to glory again with its technology leadership.
The problem is it is so so difficult to maintain this gradual and stable depreciation.
