I do like the benefits as well.
Being a GS member for almost 2 years, I haven't really taken much advantages till recently.
Lately, after realizing I have accumulated a lot of "complimentary regional and system-wide upgrades" and some of them will soon expire, I've now always asked my secretary to book all of my Int'l travels on UAL flights, and then called the dedicated 800 number (for GS members only, usually picked up within 2 rings 24/7) to get free upgrade to First Class.
They sent me a letter a couple of months back saying that if I can buy another 4 full-fared Business/First Class round trip tickets within this year, I should be able to maintain my GS status for another year. Since then, I've done 3, so am not really sure if the privilege will continue next year...
As far as the benefit goes, the article above pretty much covered everything, from lounge/shower, to priority boarding, to rebooking. The best thing I personally feel is the good treatment applying to family members traveling together with me. For example, I'm going to take the whole family to Vancouver for a vacation in January, and I can easily upgrade all 4 of us to First class, free of charge, even now (way before anyone else even sees the available seats).
So, if you travel a lot (and particularly if your company flies you in Business a lot), make sure you stick with one airline, either UA, or AA, or Delta (world's largest airline) and make sure you join the FFP to take the best advantage.
Just my 2 cents...
