Nothing has changed. When evaluating a startup, we got nothing much other than people, a unproven business model(at least not 100% proven yet), some technology and in some cases a few clients. Obviously, the only thing we can rely on is the management. If business model or technology, they will make it work. If there are not enought clients, they will figure out how to get more.
But when looking at a established enterprise, you have a lot more in your hand. One thing you do have is brand. Surprisingly, brand is a very enduring thing. When a company does have a brand, the management does have some room to make mistakes. One example you may want to take it look is Gap. The company made some merchandise strategy mistakes a couple of years ago, Gap was on the brink of going under. But now Gap is back with a correct merchandise.
