when the "reform" started 20 years ago. 20 years ago Den told China what to do, but nobody has ever had an answer to "how to do". Hu is now trying to resolve that question, yet the problems have accumulated to be so thick and wide that it will take a few generations to correct -- and some problems can never ever be corrected. Some social problems are unlike problems in other areas. Once they occur their influence is irreversable.
I have to say that Jiang was one of the worst leaders in the Chinese history. During his 13 years in office he did nothing except enjoying his show-style presidency. He was not the kind of man to lead and build a country -- he did not have that character. While Deng had his credit in openning China to an economic world, he completely annuled that credit and diminished himself by choosing Jiang as his successor.
I realize I am making some very general remarks but I will try to give some well supported argument later.
