between law school and business school (I got into both). I was then at a top law firm in the valley for less than a year (passed the patent bar at the job). The firm would sponsor me for evening law school, also similar offers from two top firms in DC. I talked to many people, both in business and law, and eventually decided business school was the way to go.
I did love the patent work, especially in light of my background of being trained as a scientist -- you don't have to do the actual experiments, but to design all the "perfect" experiments without being afraid of failures. It's very intellectually challenging. However, on the other hand, I saw myself doing similar things over and over again. I would see what I would be doing for the next 10 or 20 years. In addition, too many paper work, and too few human interaction, which I didn't like. The last straw on the camel was that at the time, a brilliant and rising star associate in the firm went to corporate. Many people asked me, if you want to go to business, why do you want to take a detour of going to law first?
I don't regret at all the decision I made. After school, I was lucky enough to get into a top consulting firm in China. Although I had to come back to the States after losing the more-than-one-year battle against the Chair of Family Board , I'm doing what I like to do, at the same time, fully utilizing my experience in IP.
Although my situation is slightly different from yours, I guess it can be used as a reference for you. I think the key questions that you need to ask yourself, as other friends suggested, are "What do you want to do in your life? What do you like, or dislike?"
No doubts, patent or IP is a rising field in China, which ahs lots of potential. 10 years ago, not many patents were filed in China. Today, most patents, especially those in bio/pharma, elect to enter China through PCT. In the meantime, many Chinese patents are entering western countries. However, patent law has a very deep learning curve, and it requires a lot of talents and practice to become an excellent patent attorney. A mere six-month training would not be sufficient, especially you'll be pretty much on your own after the six months -- telecommunication won't work in this situation. To become a real expert in patent strategy, you'll need a mentor constantly nurturing you. (BTW, if you're not a US citizen, you'll lose patent agent status after being oversea for over a year.)
On the other hand, if you're in a great university like Tsinghua, Beida, Fudan, you'll have lots of opportunities if your research direction is right. You had publication in Science and Nature, so you definitely have the talents to succeed. The Chinese private/state enterprises are collaborating closely with research institutions. They're hungry of new projects that can be implemented right away. As you know, bio/pharma are outsourcing to Asia. You'll be an excellent bridge of the two continents, and in high demand!
Eventually, the decision boils down to "What do you want to do in your life? What do you like, and dislike?" Once you have those answers, all others are just the paths to that ultimate goal, and every path will lead to that goal.
