Answers to 深圳往事(III)

你的员工会不会有抵触情绪.
I don't think anyone would have, or at least expressed 抵触情绪. It is the requirement, period. For a manufacturing compamny, you have to demonstrate some kind of assertiveness and authority. They are highly compensated employees. It is in my expectations that they should work harder and longer hours. Isn't this something we all do in the US, like in the Valley?
I set up the company and hired all key staffs by my self. We have together experienced very difficult time due to the resistance to moving manufacturing to China from corporate in the US and from our Hong Kong office. Remember we were pioneering back in the early 90's. Dismentaling a factory and move it to China was a hard ball for anyone in Hong Kong or US to swallow. But good thing is my staff saw how I stepwise played tango with the US and Hong KOng and gradually built up the factory and suceeded the transition. I think that is where the trust coming from.
On a seperate note, the overall employee turn-over rate for the top brass was less than 5%.

Speaking of the "新进的大学生是什么学校毕业", I am going to offend a few people here. I NEVER hire anyone from top schools! Let me put in a nice way, they pretty much below to other industries. As I said in the past, we are a manufacturing company with some R&D design function. We need someone, who can be dedicated, hard-working and experienced (on the production support and R&D side.) Which abover criteria do you think the fresh college kids from 北大 or Fudan can meet? Therefore, unless the top-school candidate can show me that he has worked in a company with hands-on experiences for more than 5 years, I wouldn't enve look at his resume. Interestingly, I met the General Manager from Du-Pont, who was right across our building. He completely shared my view.
Yes, I like "hungy people" too.

---------------------------------------------------
The composition of my staff are:
1. Top managers/supervisors: Staffs from Hong Kong, or hired from Hong Kong. My best allies like Mr. Wen. Some less experienced, but hard working guys from Bangladash and Sri Lanka. Very good engineers, trained indeed in top school of China (ZheDa), but without job-hopping attitude!
2. Starting from second year, 50% of key positions are hold my local Chinese, who have demonstrated their leadership skills and loyalty. On from JiaDa, the rest from regular colleges or 3 year degrees.
3. Westeners willing to have some "China" exposure. Clerical, or marketing and communication positions. I will talk about them in my later post.
4. Hai-guis. This term was not invented. Yet, there were HGs already at that time. Some are exceptionally good. Some just wanted a "lauch pad".
Want more? Wait for my stories "coming soon to a screen near you..."
