1)A publically traded company was offering 5% discount off its stock market price to the company's current shareholders or employees each month. It used a formula of the high and low of the stock prices for a certain period of time (say 10 business days) to determine the market price. So you buy the stocks directly from the company with 5% discount and sell short the same numbers of shares of the stocks in the open market. So you are market neutral for this stock. No matter it is up or it is down, you have locked up in price. Many times I regreted because the stock price was up after I sold short. If I didn't, I could have more return. But you got to have the same pattern. Don't switch it if it is working for you.As soon as you get the certificate of the common stocks from the company, you immediately send it to your broker to cover your short position in a short period of time. So you make 5% in difference in one month. If you use the same amount of investing proceeds for each month, you will have a return of 60% per year, with least risk! That is why I mentioned before I don't buy the comment of higher return comes with higher risk. So Mr. King, you got me to talk.
Regarding the hedging method for house in China, I will ask you why you need to hedge it? In the long term, the value of it will be higher. You may need to have a place to stay more frequently when you are growing older. My worry is when we reach our retirement age, we cannot afford the apt. or house in China with the US$ we have!!! So having a house in RMB denomination itself is a kind of hedging.
