Some Chinese names, after translated into English, sound funny and could be potentially embarassing. Now don't get me wrong, I am Chinese and I love and embrase our culture ( heck I am hanging around this board, that should count for something ), but just from language perspective, a name like 'David Wang' vs 'Wang GongDang'.
The choice is pretty clear.
Indian, Korean, Japanese names , while still difficult to pronounce, don't have this problem.
I remember on Jay Leno show he was joking about names of Chinese restaurants, like 'MY Dong', 'Pukee'.
Of course this theory only covers some cases. I am interested in hearing more explanations.
