Don't know where you work. But what I know is that in the Silicon Valley now actually few people think about stock option or ESPP seriously. On the other hand, the salary in the Bay area is in fact very low when you consider the cost of living.
For example, the salary in Phila is only 9% lower than San Jose. Some positions in Intel allow you to choose the site where you want to work. But the salary difference between Chandler, AZ and Santa Clara, CA is merely 3%. You can guess where people finally choose to go... Nowadays only fools will come to the Valley
