people who network with a purpose only want to network up, not down. Also, those who do have a lot to offer in the networking game are usually the particularly discriminating type, and that's how they got to where they are to begin with. So these really "valuable" content providers (relationship providers) just use the internet as a place for chit chat, not for serious networking. Who knows what kind of rif-rafs come and go? A friend's friend doesn't mean anything. And even if I know somebody you really want to know, what's in it for me to make the intro? The higher you go, the more closed-up the circle becomes, because the "circle" becomes a business asset that you would hardly want to share with anyone else, unless the counterpart offers reciprocal connections of comparable value, and most probably in the real world, you know who these counterparts are already, and you know where to meet them.
For serious networking, you go to alumni clubs, luncheons, exclusive golf clubs, sports clubs, anything with a high barrier of entry, because you know whoever has made through the door has paid a high enough admission ticket. So, to put it bluntly, people there are worthy of each other. It sounds snobbish, but that is how serious networking is done. You need to earn your way into the circle, then you go from there, unfortunately like everything else, there is no shortcut or free lunch even in the networking practice.
