A seemingly common tale of quite uncommon business insights, where the merchant's long overdue success is no accident, nor does luck have as much to do with the turning point in his life as it first appears.
If it's not for his hard-earned business experiences throughout a quarter century, it's next to impossible to build up such wealth in merely the next 5 years.
One other implicit yet important moral of the story: the broader economic picture also has a major role to play in one's career or business development.
Japanese businessmen were once known for their real estate acumen, their reputation is piled on a long list skyscrapers owned and operated from coast to coast in the US, not to mention Hawaii. Many have studied their business and investment success, but few have devoted as much time in analyzing their subsequent failure.
One thing I can think of is an overdose of convoluted kankei (guanxi or connection), which in times of hardship impairs one's business judgment -- particularly when too much is at stake in a marketplace lacking liquidity given the dynamics of the ever-changing global financial and geopolitical landscape.
While those of us just off the starting line should not dream of striking the gold mine overnight, this graveyard merchant for sure has earned his well-deserved buckets of gold.
