You have thought this from multiple perspectives. One thing I would like to add to is that when we look at a piece of art, we should first ask ourselves: what do I want out of it? Do I want to understand the intention of the artist who created it? Or do I just want to re-create it solely relying on my own consciousness?
I think this is very important because the intention or “purpose” imbedded in a painting is changing as art history evolves over time.
At early time, most paintings subjects are religious stories. The artists were paid by patrons to draw and art serves that purpose. Hardly can we say that the artists were trying to express themselves.
Later on, when patrons disappeared and artists struggled to make a living, artists at that time were somehow “forced” to choose a field they like or can excel. Many portraits and landscape paintings emerged. Then there came impressionism, expressionism as we all are more familiar with.
In my humble opinion, it is at some later stage, self-expression dominates. And it takes many forms, be it car, clothes, life-style, paintings, music, etc.
Travelman said in his post that if he can’t understand the meaning of a piece of art, the artist should bear half the blame. True and not True. When a person is trying to express himself/herself, the person might not care whether majority could understand him/her. In another word, he or she might feel he/she has to express, no matter whether others can understand or not. Maybe deep down, if there is someone who precisely echoes back, he/she would not feel lonely anymore. But it is never about communication from every beginning.
250, 现在轮到你说了。
