My Dear Hui,
Your fifth birthday is coming tomorrow!
It is about a year since I left you and Mama. Maybe you have forgotten me again. My heart breaks at the thought.
Your grandma and your mamma dared not tell you the reason why your Dad had gone away because they thought you were too young to understand and keep a secret. But I am afraid you might think Dad had left you because he didn’t love you.
Maybe you couldn’t understand why so many lovely children like you were torn from their parent’s love and why the police, who are supposed to serve the people, became so crazed as to persecute peaceful Falun Gong practitioners like me, your loving father.
Although you couldn’t remember, as your father, I owe you so much. What you have lost can never be evaluated.
During the new-year days before your birth, your Dad was tortured and detained for 10 days. With you inside her, your Mama cried every day and could not eat…
When you were only two days old, the police abducted your Dad from the bedside of your birth. I heard later that you cried all night and during the whole of the 24 hours your Dad was held from you.
On your first birthday, policemen broke into our house. You were so scared that you couldn’t help crying again. After a last fleeting embrace on that very day, your Dad was abducted for two long years. I can’t imagine how many times your Mama’s tears must have run down with yours.
In truth, for truth, your Dad has faced death many times in the forced labour camp. Shut in a small cell, and after long-term sleep deprivation and drug injections, many horrible illusions burst into my brain one after another. There were many times that my tortured mind preferred death to the endurance of those deep sorrows. But I remembered that a practitioner of Truth, Compassion and Tolerance should never commit suicide. Thus I tried my best to endure and, finally, I broke through that terrible suffering with the faith of Falun Dafa. Thus I survived to write this letter to you, my darling child.
On your third birthday, you hid yourself behind your mother for you couldn’t know what a so-called ‘Dad’ meant. Your poor old Dad who had just come back from the Forced Labour Camp had to buy you ice-creams and take you to KFC to try to ease your fears.
But right before your fourth birthday, just as you had come to be familiar with your ‘Dad’, I had to go and study in the UK to escape being illegally arrested in China.
Yet even so, you and I are much more fortunate than those many orphans whose parents have now died in the persecution of Falun Gong. All were innocent people who, like your own loving daddy, believed only in Truth, Compassion and Tolerance
My heart knows it is our responsibility to help those orphans I told you about, and to help the other children who still suffer like you have in this terrible persecution. Your support in heart would be the best award to Dad.
