Meetic pays USD 20 mln for stake in China's top online dating site

Shanghai. January 19. INTERFAX-CHINA - Meetic (https://www.meetic.com), a German online dating and community site, paid USD 20 mln for a majority stake in eFriendsNet Entertainment, which operates China's largest online dating website Yeeyoo.com (https://www.yeeyoo.com), an eFriendsNet official said.
"Meetic made this acquisition because it wants to enter the social networking market in Mainland China in an efficient way," eFriendsNet spokesperson Qi Xin told Interfax Wednesday. "The business model and profitability of China's social networking industry is becoming more clear and that has drawn more attention from foreign investors."
Meetic will buy a majority stake from eFriendsNet's existing investors, but the German firm's exact share in eFriendsNet was not disclosed.
Meetic has already transferred traffic from its Chinese website to Yeeyoo.com, and will also send senior staff from Europe to provide training to Yeeyoo.com's employees. Moreover, Meetic may also later purchase a 100% stake in eFriendsNet, Qi said.
The USD 20 mln Meetic paid for the majority stake in eFriendsNet will be reinvested in the company's operations. One investment will be building a system capable of authenticating personal information that users provide to the website. A major problem for the online dating business has been the inability to ensure that information provided by members is honest.
"We will invest heavily in this authentication system," Qi said.
In addition, eFriendsNet will also use some of the money to acquire assets that are able to enrich the company's products and services. The Chinese firm is already talking with a few European companies, recommended by Meetic, about adding new products to its website. A portion of the money will also be used to expand eFriendsNet's marketing, promotions, and human resource functions.
Founded in December 2003, eFriendsNet provides online dating services via its internet portal Yeeyoo.com, and is also a provider of mobile value-added services. The company is a nationwide mobile value-added services provider for China Mobile and China Unicom. Yeeyoo.com currently has more than 4 mln registered members, making it China's largest online dating site, Chinese IT consulting firm iResearch said in a report.
