all the three factors the author listed are truely vital strategic concerns as i see.
let me try to list out some vise versa here just o see why the u.s. had no incentive to piss the chinese off
1. the u.s. troops are tied up in two battle grounds already. the u.s. troops are designated with a capacity to fight in two battle grounds. the american way of thinking is always flexing the military mustle, not any other way. otherwise we would not see the mess in iraq as it is now. they did have other chanced but totally ignored. i do not expect uncle sam turns smart by 2015, if nothing was learnt from korea and then vietnam conflicts by now in past century. but then,
everyone knows china was the advaseries of the us military until 911. it is not that u.s. likes china any better now. the american g.i.s must be first pulled off from those stikcy areas before they step up to the chinese.
with the u.s. foreign policies practiced the way it is, we have to see what the middle east balance would be by 2015. remember u.s. is a country with strategic interests in every part of the world. chinese interests are defined much simpler.
2. chinese government owns the u.s. debts as the u.s. congress is already probing, and other factors i would not try to list here.
3. chinese cards are needed in international political games to be plugged in where the americans do not feel comfortable or incapable to play. this would help reduce the necessity of deploying the tight american troops
we see that in korea and we see that in iran, we will see that in more and more places in the world: chinese have no reason to piss anyone off but the americans are getting less and less popular outside u.s., especially since iraq invasion. and this is not just among the enemies, it is among the allies of the u.s. too.
chinese government does not need to get very smart, just play on the hope that american government and the ligeslature does not get any smarter than how they are today. how soon do you think americans stop thinking that they are not the boss of the world but part of a world?
if not, well...it would come to the day when the immigrants to the usa want no usa passports....
i am not so concerned about the u.s.a./china conflicts any time soon since they both need one another and this is not a matter of like or not.
i am concerned over the potential of conflicts between china and japan. i do hope next japense prime minister is smarter in international politics and how to balance between japanese domestic politics and the international one. after all japan can hardly be perceived to be able to survive on its own natural reources nor market. so if it cannot solve the disputes with the other countries, it may easily help the ultra right wing nationalist interests on that island to push the country to an extreme...all it takes is the next and much worse economic depression and high jobless rate....someone will blame it all on other countries...like the one it had wars with before and concored for 8 years where the cheap labor and natural reources (not energy) and certainly market is a a temptation...
