Joke aside, from your pictures I can see my mother's family house in 新天地. The family lived there for about eighty yrs, including surviving cultural revolution, before being evicted by the gov to prepare for the new mall.
Three yrs ago I met Ben Woods, the chief architect for 新天地, and told him the story. There was a long pause. He knew the house well and was apologetic about the gov's rough tactics. He obviously had no fault in it, and he followed his teacher's path to turn historically important building into modern functional pieces without losing the characters. I took comfort in the thought that the fate of the house could be lots worse, without someone like him who cares about the history. For that, I thanked him.
