China's New Oriental seeks $100 mln-plus IPO
SHANGHAI, June 28 (Reuters) - China's New Oriental Education & Technology Group, a provider of foreign language instruction, is preparing for a U.S. stock listing worth at least $100 million, knowledgable sources said on Wednesday.
New Oriental has hired Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse to work on the initial public offering, sources said, although one added that no timetable had been set.
The listing would take place on the New York Stock Exchange, said another source.
Most venture capital-backed Chinese companies like New Oriental have looked to the Nasdaq for their recent offerings, with Hong Kong a strong second choice.
More recently, however, the New York and London stock exchanges have also made pushes in the market, with New York attracting one of the biggest offerings -- a nearly $400 million IPO -- by Chinese solar panel maker Suntech (STP.N: Quote, Profile, Research) last year.
This year has been a relatively slow one so far for Chinese firms on the Nasdaq, with just two listings to date.
The only significant one, for China GrenTech Corp. (GRRF.O: Quote, Profile, Research), has lost 40 percent of its value since its IPO, which may be scaring off other companies.
Other Chinese firms now in the listing process include Acorn International, operator of a TV home shopping network, which is aiming to raise $200 million in a Nasdaq IPO as early as next month, a source told Reuters last week.
Mindray, China's largest maker of blood monitoring equipment, is also hoping to raise up to $300 million in a U.S. offering, according to a Hong Kong media report.
Home Inns, one of China's top budget hotel operators, told Reuters earlier this month it had taken the initial steps toward an overseas IPO; and online real estate advertising firm Soufun.com may also pursue a listing by year end.
