Even the INS says that you don't need re-entry permit unless you will spend more than one year outside of US, but in your case, the best thing to do is to get one. Because another assumption for you to keep the greencard is to not to spend more than 6 months outside of US on regular basis. A re-entry permit gives you extra security in case if you have trouble next time when you enter the US. You don't need to show it unless you feel that there is a problem. With the re-entry permit, INS officers can stop you from entering the country.
Just my experience.
