rather than in US, the phone must be a Tri-band or Quad-Band phone. Because the frequency used in North America is 850/1900, while they are 900/1800 in other countries. So, you have a dual band phone, even you unlock it, you can't use it in China if the phone's dual band are 850/1900.

Also, some times the carries are not willing to do it for you, they just refuse your request.
