I am going back at the end of the month, and under similar situation: high and stable double income here, one high income there.
Although I have been working on the road back home for a long time, when it is finally here, suddenly I can't quite remember why I want go back, I had to rethink all over again. I can think of these few reasons:
1. I am better than just simply making a living, which is exactly what I am doing in the US. If all I wanted is making a good living, I can do it here or I can do it in China. But in China, I might be able to do a little more than making a good life for myself, I can do something that I can be proud of. I don't mean money but making a difference in other people's life.
2. I have been travelling back and forth between China and US for a number of years, I have seen a lot of changes. Going back to China would enable me to watach China changing from a poor country to a great power, not remotely, but firsthand. It is kind like watching your kid grow.
3. Can't be too serious about life, and try to make a right decision every single time. Do what will make me happy, and right now, I would be happier if I go back. I am aware of the fact that there is no way I can have the same living standard as over here, and I am prepared to take some serious financial losses, but if I am happier, it is worthwhile.
But be sure your family would be on board, if your family can't be with you, you would not be happy. I can't understand how so many people can leave their family here and go back alone.
