Well, Zhuang's logic might be right, but he is not answering the question, esp after Hui's rephrasing.
The whale language is a perfect example. Let's say Ms White found out how whales communicate and wanted to publish it on Science. One member of the editorial board asked her: "How, Ms White, did you get to know the secrets of whales?" (1) Should she answer the question in detail or should she simply ask "How do you get to know that I do not know?"
If anyone claims that he discovered a law of physics, or a mathmatical theorem, and we are to examine it. We have to have an assumption in our mind that he/she is wrong, unless he/she can prove it to us. This process may be so fundamental that many of us are not aware of it.
Hui was asking how Zhuang got to know it. I do not think that Hui had made the conlusion that Zhuang actually knew nothing. He merely had that assumption in his mind, and he was waiting for explanation. It was definitely possible for Zhuang to know it, yet he had to prove it.
It seemed Zhuang was somehow annoyed by that assumption and was too eager to defend himself. As a result he actually evaded that question.
(1) It seems to me that the Chinese expression 知道, being different from the english word "know", also can mean "get to know". How would you translate 哦，我知道了 into english? "I knew it" or "I got it"?
