your guy was only being political, did not mean much...however
it would have been important to say something and be political too
at least you need to practice anyway, if not try to get some good first impression

but you were right: do not presume anything. if you presume the baby was the grandson, it may cause some uncomfortable feeling it was not
if you really were curious about the baby you can comment on the baby and if he may explain. say you may offer nice comments like "it is a cute baby! how lovely...!"

but do not feel too bad. at least he know you did not mean much by that

i presume you have not been in this country for long. so all you need to do is make more observation and practice mroe...accumulate in your stage one
