Gambling:
To bet on an uncertain outcome. To take a risk in the hope of gaining an advantage or a benefit. To engage in reckless or hazardous behavior.
Hedging:
The practice by which a business or investor limits risk by taking positions that tend to offset each other. For example, a business stands to lose money if the price of a commodity it holds declines, but it can offset this risk by agreeing to sell a specified amount of the commodity at a set price at some point in the future. However, if the market price of the said commodity is lower than the set price at the future point, the buyer of the commodity loses money.
I don't see much difference between Gambling and Hedging.
Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM) was a U.S. hedge fund which used trading strategies such as fixed income arbitrage, statistical arbitrage, and pairs trading, combined with high leverage. It failed spectacularly in the late 1990s, leading to a massive bailout by other major banks and investment houses. - Wiki.
LTCM was the first major financial scandal created by Wall Street. 目前的金融危机是华尔街的才子们知道LTCM的hedging方法不可以重复的条件下，用不同的方式创造的问题。但他们的本质是一样的，即使用 derivative, 让人们参与赌博。
关键是，赌博的程序是他们设置的。赌博的过程，就是华尔街把derivative 一次再一次的 衍生的过程。每一次衍生，就是巨额的奖金的收获。直到没有人接手。而华尔街的才子们的信条是：I。B。G。也就是大家都认为，真正到没有人接手的时候，I'll Be Gone. (其实学的是中国的国粹： 击鼓传花 - 开个玩笑)
中国官员的无知不能怪罪于华尔街的骗子们，毕竟你可以选择不被骗 - 事实上中国的金融管制为中国减少了巨额的浪费，不然中国老百姓如何能抵挡得住高盛、Bear Stern之流雇佣的高学历的海龟土鳖们的忽悠 - 那样的话，中国现在就完全没有说话的力气了。现在，起码还有点钱说发展内需。
回到镜子的比喻。其实镜子的比喻不但真实，而且讲的太轻了。所谓的衍生工具，到最后，不过是小民们玩的 Ponzi Game 的华尔街的 euphemism。事实上，Madoff已经给了一个最好的注解。
