China Minmetals Corp’s acquisition of Noranda is a typical governmental behavior. You can say we pay too much, but this is a big step/attempt to access valuable strategic metal mining resources worldwide by China.
In last 10 so years, when Chinese companies need metals, they just went to the commodity market (e.g. LME) and buy metals (such as primary aluminum, copper & nickel) in cash. With the increase of demand from China, the world non-ferrous metal’s price has been bid up (doubled) in last 3 years. Chinese companies have to pay more for those commodities, while metal brokers did make big money. For China, the big show just begins. China requires a long-standing and reliable material supply to fuel its growth (this is the same as oil). Since all valuable mining sites (such as those huge & rich copper mines in Brazil) have been sold out (e.g. 99 years’ mine site explore license signed by Noranda). Such acquisition is the only way we can access those vital resources.
Remember, those metals are (militarily speaking) strategic commodities. They are non-regeneratable but recyclable commodities. So for China Minmetals Corp’s acquisition, it might not be appropriate to assess it from a pure business point of view.
