taking up a job is almost like starting a romatic relationship.
commitments are required. however, this is only within the validity of the span when the relationship is still there.
as long as you still pick up pay check, you sold you 8-5 to them they own you within that time. but once you stop picking up their pay check, you owe them nothing.
i do not feel guilty, in fact, all the people i worked for and all the people worked for me, we still are in contact to this day.
does that tell you something? working together as like moving in with your girlfriend. beautiful relationship, when it works. when one side start to feel funny about it, time to move on.
same as your job. you walked in for the terms they spelled out for you. you agreed and evidenced by that job offer you accepted. so you pick up pay check regularly and you bring your contributions to the table at the degree you agreed to
either their situation changed so they cannot keep you at the terms and conditions they promised and so you need to go, or you get a better termed offer somewhere else and you need to go.
this is like your girl freidn think you are so damn dorky, after getting to know you completely by moving in with you, can you blame her if she is right and she proved by goign with a guy of her dream with a fuckingn big house and hot wheels...
and you are not only dorky but also unable to accommodate her desires...
hey life is tough, no body siad it was going to be fair. you watch for yourself, they do the same for themselves. this should be a good and easy decision: hey boss, i love you and the job and everything, but i got this offer, man, i just cannot turn it down. what, you think your boss has the nerve to say no?!
unless you promised them that you will stay for a certain period of time then you feel guilty. heck, i never promised anyone. all i know is as long as i am working for them, i give my 100% performance. but the second i walk out of there, it is someone else prob. this world will exist with or without you.
don't flatter yourself. they can always make it work for themselves.
on the other hand, if you jump around too frequently, i would not hire you because i would have a prob to maintain conteingency and consitancy on my part as a manager. your jumping around will cost me extra efforts. but it is almost stupid to work for a company for too long because you don't really wait to get promoted, you switch for higher positions!
i would not want to move until i know this is goign to help me in both short term and long term.
At GE, a turn over at 2-3 years is norm. everyone comes in for that brand attachement, and walks away with it. guess what, it works like a charm! it gets you into the door.
if you are to have your own business, you want to work for big companies to learn the management style, you then need to work for small companies to learn how to manage eveyr thing from a to z.
if you are looking for a job security, pick a family culture oriented mid sized company. they may not pay the highest, but they will keep you.
at big companies, you are nothing but numbers. so why would i feel guilty when i know they could ask me to leave any time?
at public firms, your manager does not care that much, as long as you do not create too much trouble for him.
