this is really about competitions among the co-workers
unfortunately, sounds to me J knows better than you do about the people skills. this is typical: those who know how to take credit get the credits, those work hard get the hard works
again as i suggested in PM, do not believe you should waste any time to change what he build up already, but rather look for another job.
getting even is really not worth it. do something constructive for yourself.
not sure if J has same job description as yours, if so, does the company have a visibility on everyone's pay (how can you prove that you get the info legally and thus be able to use it to build a case?)
the only way to get to the company is take an offer from other company and talk to your boss: how much is your work worth to them? make a serious offer or you are taking a walk
