My points are:
The Chinese trained engineers are of lower quality than the western trained ones. Innovation, boarder knowledge, etc. However, the engineering fundamentals are just as good. Let us say that they are 70% as good, but theye make 20% of the salary.
There are 325,000 engineering graduates in China every year which is 5 times the US graduates.
Chinese manufacturers are clusters which make the mass production possible. The economic of scale.
The transfer of knowledge from the western manufacturers to china is a lot faster than most of the western management can grasp. How difficult isit to learn 6sigma, lean engineering, 5s? 5 days of insensive case study. That is it. But it takes one semester to learn the normal distribution, design of experiements. Therefore, the so called western manufacturing breakthroughs are over blown.
Chinese are climbing the food chain at extrodinary speed. 5 years ago, Chinese are known to make shoes, belt etc, Now, most of the electronics in the world are made by Chinese, digital cameras, etc. The Chinese will soon make auto parts, CPUs, and eventurely the jet engines.
