management payment structures. It has historical reasons as well. In the American corporate world, ceo's pay package is based on, first of all, how many employees under your supervision or leadership if there is any. If company A refuses to pay that much to ceo, the company B will hire him/her away. This is the market price and ceos know how much they are worth, so do the board compensation committees. If you are in that position, you might not refuse such pay package as well. I am not saying it is right or it is wrong; this is the way it is. If I am a shareholder of a company, I love to see the ceo is working for free. Some ceos are too greedy for sure, but other ceos are really worth the money and I think they are under paid!
Fringe benefits are being adjustable, but the pensions for several generations of the retired employees of GM are not. This is one of the liabilities sitting on GM's balance sheets which TM does not "enjoy."
On the other hand, it does not make any sense for TM ceo to make more than a certain amount of yearly income because anything over that threshold the Japanese income tax will eat 99% of it away! while the usa taxation "only" take away less than 50%. That is why the Japanese ceos prefer golf and country club membership as their bonus.[/img]
